Answer: 5 million miles

A new survey of Washington’s Capital Bikeshare program says four in 10 users report using cars less — for an average annual savings of 523 miles for each of those users, which translates to a total of 5 million miles yearly not driven, according to survey authors. Most of the trips (56 percent) were for non-work purposes, and more than half of respondents used bike share as a feeder to reach transit stops.
