Who’s going on the new $10 bill?

Answer: a woman

On June 17, the Treasury Department announced that the $10 bill is getting a makeover, and the new design will feature a woman. Founding father Alexander Hamilton will remain a part of the design, either in a diminished form, or the department may instead use two different designs for the bill. While currency is updated with new security features every few years, portrait changes are rare, with the most recent occurring in 1928.

An FAQ on thenew10.treasury.gov explains that the figure will be someone who was a champion for democracy in the United States. The department is asking for public input to determine who would be the paragon of such ideals. The new bill will be designed over the course of several years and enter circulation sometime after 2020.

#TheNewTen is the project’s official Twitter hashtag, and tracking it leads to many different ideas about who should be on the nation’s currency, including software engineer Grace Hopper, country music singer Loretta Lynn, abolitionist and former slave Harriet Tubman, activist Rosa Parks, and model Bo Derek. Others have taken to suggesting that the $5 bill should feature comedian Bill Murray.

Reactions to the Treasury’s decision are mixed, with many celebrating the idea of women breaking into a male-dominated tradition, while others point out that Hamilton having been the nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury and the department’s principal architect may make the $10 bill a poor choice for such an endeavor.

As much as I dislike Alexander Hamilton, he definitely deserves to be on our money more than Andrew Jackson. #TheNewTen — Chase D. Troutner (@Captain_Strongo) June 17, 2015
I've long favored redoing US currency top to bottom, but doing it for bogus PC/SJW reasons is idiotic and should be resisted. #TheNewTen — Varad Mehta (@varadmehta) June 17, 2015

Yes, makes sense to take off the man who was the 1st Secretary of Treasury off the $10 bill...not #theNewTen — Jen Olney (@OLNEY_JEN) June 17, 2015

@USTreasury You know that Alexander Hamilton statue that's in front of your building? Yeah, he was kind of important. #TheNewTen — Jarrett Stepman (@JarrettStepman) June 17, 2015
