What is NYC piloting for its newest public Wi-Fi program?

Answer: trash cans

By attaching Wi-Fi equipment to BigBelly solar-powered trash cans, New York City is examining a new avenue for municipal Wi-Fi. Computer World reports that this approach would prevent buildings from blocking the signal because the trash cans are on the ground. Possible funding mechanisms include advertising of local businesses, and while nothing is final, the attempt shows that cities aren’t giving up on Wi-Fi quite yet.
