Answer: A free cup of coffee ... if you drive a Mitsubishi.
Gizmodo reports that the car manufacturer will be rolling out a new smartphone app that tracks customers’ driving and rewards them for good practices. The app will tap into the smartphone’s sensors while the user is driving in order to collect data such as speed and location.
Users will earn badges when they exhibit good driving behaviors like obeying the speed limit. These badges will be redeemable for rewards such as discounted accessories and oil changes. By the end of the year Mitsubishi hopes to add free cups of coffee to the list of perks.
According to the The Wall Street Journal, the data Mitsubishi collects from the apps will be sold first to state auto insurance companies. It will be used to improve risk models and adjust insurance premiums accordingly. The Journal also reported that following a trial period, insurers would be able to use the data to create risk profiles for individual users, suggesting that the data might not be anonymized.
