What U.S. city that once encouraged residents to "Dumpster dive" is encouraging even more activities during an event this summer?

Answer: New York City

Back in 2010, the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) partnered with real estate developer Macro Sea to kick the annual Summer Streets program up a notch -- by placing three "Dumpsters-turned-pools" near Grand Central Station. People took turns swimming for 20 minutes each in these "Dumpster pools."

And at this year's Summer Streets event, held August 4, 11 and 18, NYC residents can take a zip line and scale a climbing wall, among other activities, while nearly 7 miles of city streets are open for everyone to play, run, walk and  bike.
