What new will "functional coatings" on vehicles mean for cars in the future?

Answer: They'll never need to be washed

Researchers at TU/e (the Dutch University of Technology) have developed a coating that repairs itself after damage, and it has numerous potential applications – mobile phones that will remain clean from fingerprints, cars that never need to be washed, and aircrafts that need less frequent repainting. This is made possible from nano-sized molecular groups that provide these specific properties. The surfaces are developed "with special ‘stalks’ carrying the functional chemical groups at their ends, and mixing these through the coating. If the outer surface layer is removed by scratching, the ‘stalks’ in the underlying layer re-orient to the new surface, thereby restoring the function," according to TU/e.
