Why is AT&T heading for a potential battle with iPhone users -- and the FCC?

Answer: For limiting iPhone's FaceTime

According to USA Today, Apple will launch a new version of its iOS operating system later this year, and FaceTime will be usable over any cellular data network -- and could lead to heavier network traffic and potentially hurt carriers' revenue.

In a statement, AT&T said it will offer FaceTime over its cellular network as "an added benefit" for its new data share plans.

But as USA Today reported, the FCC's rules on network neutrality say that Internet providers may not block content, applications or sites that compete with their services -- and one consumer advocate says that although carriers are permitted to engage in "reasonable network management," there is no technical reason why one data plan should be able to access FaceTime, and another not.
