How many American households don't have a car and also lack access to public transit?

Answer: More than 700,000 households

A report from the Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program, as reported by Wired.com on Monday, Aug. 29, found that the problem is particularly bad in suburban areas, where 42 percent of residents without cars also don’t have access to mass transit.

Unsurprisingly these car-less, transit-less families are less likely to find jobs, according to the report.

But the statistics aren't all bad. Public transit seems to be widely available in urban areas.

"In the nation’s largest metropolitan areas, 7.5 million households do not have access to a private automobile," according to Brookings. "... Over 90 percent of zero-vehicle households in large metropolitan areas live in neighborhoods with access to transit service of some kind."
