What new invention could help keep picked bananas fresh for more than two weeks?

Answer: Spray-on coating

Bananas are delicious, but often overripen before they can be eaten. Like other fruits and veggies, bananas remain "alive" after being picked or harvested, and "breathe" through their skin. The faster a fruit breathes, the faster it ripens -- and a banana's breathing rate, so to speak, doesn't slow down after it's been picked (unlike many other fruits). This means they ripen more quickly than most fruits, often becoming brown and mushy before we have a chance to enjoy them.

That's where a scientist from China’s Tianjin University of Science and Technology comes in. Dr. Xihong Li announced the development of a spray-on coating that can keep picked bananas fresh for almost two weeks. The coating works by slowing down respiration and killing a type of bacteria that causes the fruit to rot.
