How close did NASA spacecraft Juno get to the surface of Jupiter this past weekend?

Answer: 2,610 miles

Juno has completed one of 36 planned orbits, having now come within 2,610 miles of Jupiter’s surface as it captured images and took measurements with its nine scientific instruments.

Subsequent orbits are not planned to be as close as the first, and although Juno is equipped with a protective titanium wall, some of the instruments are expected to fail within eight orbits or so. Among the craft’s objectives are to map the planet’s magnetic fields, gravitational fields, the structure of its clouds, and measure the amount of water in the atmosphere.
