How is Dallas trying to shake its nomination as one of the worst cities for bicyclists?

Answer: with a new bridge

A new bridge -- called the new Margaret McDermott Bridge -- to cross the Trinity River into downtown Dallas is expected to finish construction by 2017. The bridge will have dedicated bicyclist and pedestrian lanes, separated from vehicle traffic by 12 and 23 feet, respectively.

Dallas has twice been ranked the worst city in the nation for bicyclists, according to Fast Company, with a 2011 Bicycle Plan that has yet to be enacted. Some, like Santiago Calatrava, one of the project's architects, are hopeful that the new structure will point the city toward more sustainable practices, and transform the region into a central gathering place.
