Though many emerging technologies spring ahead in leaps and bounds, progress in artificial intelligence is slower as scientists struggle to understand how the brain works, let alone how to replicate its amazing feats.

A paper recently published by researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago and Hungary -- called Measuring an Artificial Intelligence System's Performance on a Verbal IQ Test For Your Children -- found that an artificially intelligent system given an IQ test scored what would be considered average for a 4-year-old human.

Researchers used the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI-III), a test designed to measure the global capacity of one's ability to act purposefully, think rationally and deal effectively with the environment.

One of the areas where the AI was found to struggle is the field of research known as word sense disambiguation and natural language processing. Understanding context in language is a sophisticated task that humans do without even noticing. When asked, "Why do people shake hands?" the AI responded with "epileptic fit," a sophisticated answer for a 4-year old, but not the one they were looking for.
