Which manufacturer has developed a new type of battery that could slash the standard weight of cars?

Answer: Volvo

The Swedish carmaker has spent the past three years testing a new material consisting of carbon fiber, polymer resins and “nanostructured batteries and supercapacitors” that can allow body panels and structural components within a car to store energy. The material can be molded into different shapes to replace various pieces of the vehicle, both eliminating the need for a traditional battery and reducing overall weight of the car by as much as 15 percent. The energy panels can be recharged through an electric plug or through the energy captured while braking.
