Through what vehicle may people someday map buildings?

Answer: Cockroaches

Remote-controlled cockroaches, developed by researchers at North Carolina State University, could be used to map damaged structures. By releasing the cyborg insects into a building, allowing them time to disperse in a random pattern, and then instructing them to follow the nearest wall and send back radio signals when they get close to one another, special software can construct a likeness of the building’s layout. The idea has been tested in simulations and a field run is expected to happen soon. Researchers suggest that this concept could be used for first responders such as firefighters, or the bugs could be equipped with chemical sensors to detect other types of threats.
