How does a new type of malware attach itself to a device without a network connection?

Answer: via inaudible sound

Developed as a proof of concept by the Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, the malware transmits data very slowly (20 bits per second) by accessing a device’s standard speakers or microphone. Any device within 60 feet can be affected and according to researchers, the malware can be used to create a mesh network between devices and connect them to the Internet. Ars Technica has more details on how the new technology works.
