The first U.S. governor of African-American descent. Pinchback was the son of a former white slave owner and his wife, a former slave. Elected a Louisiana state senator in 1868, Pinchback was appointed senate president pro tempore. In 1871, the Lt. Governor, Oscar Dunn (the first black Lt. Governor) died, elevating Pinchback to the position. In 1872, Louisiana Gov. Henry Clay Warmoth was impeached, leaving Pinchback to pinch hit as governor for 35 days -- the remainder of Warmoth's term (Warmoth was not convicted).
