How is one police department cracking down on illegal guns?

Answer: by asking for volunteers

Police in Deloit, Wis., population 36,000, recently launched an initiative in which they ask residents to volunteer to have their homes searched for guns. The idea spawned from home inspection techniques used by health officials fighting Ebola, Police Chief Norm Jacobs said.

"Gun violence is as serious as the Ebola virus is being represented in the media, and we should fight it using the tools that we've learned from our health providers,” Jacobs told wpr.org.

The chief admitted their expectations of finding anything or even getting any takers on the offer were low, but that it might lead them to find something useful.
