Denver Tests Public Safety Communications Network

The high-speed technology could improve the way public-safety agencies respond to emergency situations.

DENVER -- In trying to find a quicker, more efficient way to respond to emergency situations, the city and county of Denver tested Ricochet Networks' high-speed wireless Internet technology, using the technology in several public-safety situations this spring.

"For the past several months, we've tested Ricochet in dozens of applications and situations," said lieutenant John Pettinger of the Denver Police Department. "The potential is great. Critical information can be quickly sent and received by police and fire agencies, officers on the street and command posts."

The technology allows public-safety personnel to download large files such as mug shots, geographical information system data, live video feeds, building plans and medical records in the field.

Ricochet provides law enforcement and safety personnel with the ability to access data and submit reports more quickly and securely, according to Denver Chief Information Officer Dan Jarvis. "Isn't it in everyone's best interest for us to go from one emergency to the next, versus waiting for critical information or going back to the station to search a database?"
