Gov. Schwarzenegger Restricts State Peer-To-Peer File Sharing

October 1, 2004 By

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger recently issued an executive order prohibiting the use of peer-to-peer file sharing software that compromises the security and integrity of state computer systems. The order is also an effort to curb the use of state computers to illegally disseminate and download copyrighted materials -- specifically, music, motion pictures, software and video games.

The order states: "State government should take steps to ensure that state computers are not being used to disseminate or download copyrighted material through peer-to-peer file-sharing programs."

The state CIO will implement the order by developing a statewide policy for use by each state agency, department, board, commission and office of the executive branch.
