New Jersey's OIT Wins Storage Networking World Award

The state's implementation of its SAN took top honors in the systems-implementation category.

TRENTON, N.J. -- The state's Office of Information Technology's storage-area network won a Storage Networking World Best Practices in Storage Award in the systems implementations category.

"The state is proud to be recognized by this prestigious organization for our success in implementing storage solutions," said Steve Dawson, New Jersey's CTO. "Our SAN allows us to manage disk space more effectively as well as increase capacity on databases and servers in the distributed environment."

OIT's SAN was cited for its successful design, implementation and management of an interoperable environment. The SAN also demonstrates the ability to source from multiple vendors and to maintain a heterogeneous storage network.

OIT staff worked with Hitachi Data Systems for early planning sessions for the SAN project in September 2000. They continued to work together to build the SAN environment in spring 2001. Hitachi supplied the storage arrays and staff with expertise in SAN technology. McData was subcontracted to provide fabric equipment. IBM provided tape library components for backup purposes.

"This project represented OIT's first venture into SANs," Dawson said. "Our staff put in many hours of hard work to learn the technology and make it work successfully. This recognition from SNW is hard earned and well deserved."

Awards were also presented in the categories of storage reliability, data recovery, financial return and innovation and promise. Two winners were chosen in each of the five categories. More than 500 entries were received for the awards.
