Philadelphia Regional Port Authority Implements Automated Surveillance

Video system to detect intrusions.

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Region l Port Authority (PRPA), the second-largest North Atlantic port and a strategic military seaport, will install an automated video surveillance system. GuardianWATCH will provide automated intrusion detection within the port's land and waterside perimeters.

The PRPA was selected by the U.S. Department of Defense as the nation's 14th strategic military port in October 2002, and selected by the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command as a berthing location for two of its LMSR vessels in January 2003.

The new real-time PC-based surveillance system detects and tracks targets (people, cars and boats) and automatically compares their movements to the port's security model. If a security breach occurs, responders are automatically and instantaneously notified. The threat detection technology reduces manpower expenditures by protecting miles of waterside and landside perimeters with no increase in manpower.

"GuardianWATCH will help maximize the resources of our terminal operators and port staff and is another essential component for the protection of the people and cargo at the port," said Joseph Petruzzi, director of management information services for PRPA.
