2003 Mock Prison Riot Set for April 27-30

The unmistakable sound of a prison cell door closing means different things to different people. For law enforcement and corrections officers at the former West Virginia State Penitentiary in Moundsville, W.Va., April 26 through 30, it means that the 2003 Mock Prison Riot is under way.

The 2003 Mock Prison Riot is sponsored by the Office of Law Enforcement Technology Commercialization (OLETC) a program of the National Institute of Justice, the West Virginia Department of Corrections and the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections.

The seventh annual event will be a showcase for emerging technologies, allowing vendors to introduce pertinent and life-saving technologies to corrections personnel.

Ultimately, through exhibition and demonstration, the event determines the effectiveness of the technologies by placing them in realistic situations, while offering corrections personnel from all over the country and around the world the opportunity to test the devices, and provide feedback.

The Mock Prison Riot provides corrections and law enforcement officers a unique opportunity to see and test the latest technology available to them, said Diane Quinn, OLETC corrections technology agent.

A welcome reception, hosted by OLETC, will be held a Ramada Plaza City Center Hotel in Wheeling, West Virginia, on Sunday, April 27 as a kick-off to the event.

The technology exhibition and demonstrations will take place April 28 through 30 at the former prison.

More than 1200 people, from vendors to corrections personnel, attended last year
