Oregon Employment Department Suffers Data Breach

After receiving an anonymous tip, officials announced that the personal information of more than 851,000 people could be at risk.

Hackers may have obtained the personal information of more than 851,300 people after tapping into an Oregon Employment Department database, agency officials announced Monday.

The update arrived a week after cyber-security experts discovered the breach, which targeted a registration system that unemployed Oregonians use for help finding jobs. It stores names, addresses, Social Security numbers and other details typically included in job applications.

Tech experts discovered the breach after an anonymous tipster emailed an agency employee Oct. 6. Security was fully restored the following day.

The agency is working with the Oregon State Police to discover how hackers were able to gain access and how long the breach went undetected.

There is no evidence the data has been used, according to a statement issued by the Employment Department.

The agency will offer free credit-monitoring services for people who are affected. They will be notified by mail this week.
