Mobile Passport App Cuts Travel Time through Miami Customs

When traveling internationally, passengers can submit passport and customs declaration information via the Mobile Passport app and go through lanes set aside for them.

(Tribune News Service) -- There are apps for checking your flight status, checking in at the airport and calling for a car when you land. But now travelers at Miami International Airport have a new use for technology: skipping long lines at customs.

MIA on Thursday became the second airport in the country after Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to let travelers use Mobile Passport. The app, a partnership between U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Airports Council International-North America and developer Airside Mobile, is available for iOS and Android devices.

American citizens with a valid U.S. passport and Canadian citizens with both a valid Canadian passport and B1 or B2 visa status can create a profile that allows them to enter passport and customs declaration information through the app instead of on paper. When traveling internationally, passengers can submit the information after they land and go through lanes set aside for Mobile Passport users at Miami International Airport.

“MIA lobbied hard to be one of the very first U.S. airports to offer Mobile Passport to our passengers,” Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. González said in a statement. “MIA is the perfect fit for Mobile Passport: We are America’s second-busiest port of entry, handling more than 20 million international passengers each year, and our organization is wholeheartedly committed to bringing the latest travel technology to our airport.”
