For the past 21 years, MIT Technology Review has published an annual list of technologies it believes will change the world in the coming years.

MIT's 2022 list of breakthrough technologies includes:

• Proof of stake
• Malaria vaccine
• A pill for COVID-19
• Synthetic data for AI
• A long-lasting grid battery

On this week's show, the "In Case You Missed It" crew takes a look at MIT's 2022 list and dives into which technologies could be used by — or most affect — government in the future.

The role of public CIOs has, understandably, morphed over the past several years. This change was accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced many governments and their workers to serve their communities remotely.

However, the change is also spurred by the changing needs, and expectations, of residents.

Luke Stowe has worked in government for more than 20 years. He was recently named acting deputy city manger of Evanston, Ill., but will continue serving as the city's CIO.

In a wide-ranging conversation, Haisler and Pressgrove ask Stowe about the changing role of CIOs, ever-present cybersecurity threats and how government can regain the trust of the people it serves.
