(TNS) — The Rock Falls, Ill., City Council is expected to act on selling part of its wireless network to Surf Air Wireless when it meets Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers.

At its Sept. 1 meeting, the council heard the first reading of an ordinance that would allow the sale of surplus property to Surf Air Wireless. That company and the city are collaborating on the FiberNet broadband network serving the city. Surf would buy a portion of the city's fiber broadband system for $2.25 million and begin building the network sometime in the fall.

Rock Falls mayor William Wescott said that, as many people learned through the COVID-19 pandemic, working from home is viable for many, which means they have to have reliable high-speed broadband, which this deal provides.

The council could also act on abolishing the position of city collector and on an ordinance providing for payment of outstanding obligation bonds.

The council is also expected to discuss waiving the bidding process to install a roof on the amphitheater at RB&W Riverfront Park and accept a $106,474 bid from Midwest Building and Composting for that project.
