(TNS) — The city of Mobile is launching a new smart phone texting service to help residents get information about events, projects and services on their mobile phones.

TextMyGov uses a phone’s regular SMS messaging features to relay information to the city and provide city updates to its residents. TextMyGov can answer questions 24 hours a day and make it easier to subject requests to the city of Mobile.

“We hope you will use it,” Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson said during Tuesday’s council meeting. “It should be able to answer your questions in a more expeditious manner than you’re used to and (will allow you to) get messages back to us.”

Said Council President C.J. Small, “This service will not only be vital when communicating with our constituents, it will also provide citizens an opportunity to ask questions and get answers directly on their cell phones.”

The city launched TextMyGov this week, and anyone can get started by texting “Hi” to 251-220-2122. The city, in a news release, said it will made adjustments to the program as it receives input from residents who are using it.

The program recognizes keywords and provides Mobilians with information about city services, departments or events they are interested to learn more about. For instance, if someone has a question about trash collection, they could text “trash” and will be immediately connected to information about trash collection routes, schedules and rules from the city’s website. Residents can also sign up for text updates about specific major projects and other areas of interest.
