Free Wi-Fi Internet Access Comes to Rijeka, Croatia

Said to be the largest installation currently of a free Internet access network in Croatia.

Proxim Wireless Corporation and partner Datentechnik, d.o.o., have deployed a broadband wireless system to the City of Rijeka, Croatia. Rijeka's IT Department and Krk sistemi, d.o.o., a local service provider, are using the system to provide wireless Internet access in Rijeka's city center. Residents, visitors and tourists using laptop computers, as well as Wi-Fi enabled mobile phones and gaming devices, can access the service free of charge.Rijeka is Croatia's principal seaport and its third largest city, with more than 140,000 residents. It is located on Kvarner Bay, an inlet of the Adriatic Sea.

The network was implemented using Proxim ORiNOCO AP-4000M Wi-Fi Mesh access points. According to a Proxim statement, the City of Rijeka and Krk sistemi, d.o.o, chose the ORiNOCO AP-4000M because of its superior performance and rapid deployment time.

"According to information from Rijeka city government, this is currently the largest installation of a free Internet access network in Croatia, and it will help the city of Rijeka to become an even more interesting destination for tourists," said Vojko Obersnel, mayor of the city of Rijeka.

"This network supports the highest standards in terms of availability and quality of services and enables users to use services with high network requirements such as VoIP and video conferencing," said Dzevad Hadzic, regional sales manager of Datentechnik, d.o.o.
