San Bernardino County, Calif., Tests Virtual Building Inspections

Applications can be downloaded online, and applicants can show building inspectors their projects on their smart phones or tablets.

(TNS) - San Bernardino County, Calif., has kicked off a 90-day pilot program allowing building inspections for small projects to be conducted via the Internet. “This is the kind of smart innovation that saves time, taxpayer dollars and improves customer service,” Supervisor Robert Lovingood said in a statement Tuesday.

Lovingood’s supervisorial district spans the bulk of the High Desert, which along with the San Bernardino Mountains will be the testing area for the program given the challenges of getting wireless connections in those regions. Obtaining a sufficient wireless connections is essential in order for the program to succeed, according to a county news release.

Applications can be downloaded online, and applicants can show building inspectors their projects on their smart phones or tablets. The program is starting with the simplest of projects such as water heater installations and roof inspections.

The process will facilitate the permitting process by drastically reducing the time it takes to conduct inspections, eliminating the need for inspectors to physically conduct walkthrough inspections at homes and businesses.

”Using technology to make the county’s inspection and permitting process more efficient will help residents and contractors save both time and money,” Supervisor Janice Rutherford said in a statement.

Rutherford’s district includes the mountain communities of Crestline, Lake Arrowhead and Running Springs.

“I look forward to seeing the results of this pilot project and to expanding the use of virtual technology to improve efficiencies throughout the county,” Rutherford said.
