The new chief information officer, who replaces former CIO Gail Roper, is set to begin in early 2016.

The city of Raleigh, N.C., has named a new chief information officer, who is set to start in the role in early 2016.

D. Darnell Smith was announced as the city’s choice for CIO in a press release dated Friday, Nov. 6.  He replaces Gail Roper, who resigned from her position effective June 5, 2015, to take a job directing technology strategy for the St. Joe Company in Watersound, Fla.

“I’m really excited about coming to the city of Raleigh,” Smith said in the press release. “This is a premier city and a well-run organization. I want to ensure our IT Department continues to provide the best technical support to keep our customers and our community growing.”

He is currently serving as vice president of Group IT for the Raleigh-based Elster Group, a provider of gas, electricity and water meters and related communications, networking and software solutions.

Smith formerly worked for E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Co. for nearly 20 years. He held various positions, including systems integration leader, IT manager and North America service delivery manager.
