Returning to the agency where he has spent most of his military career, California’s Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) Keith Tresh has accepted a new position at the California National Guard as director of Personnel and Human Resources at the California Military Department.

“It has been my distinct honor and privilege to serve Governor Brown and the people of California,” Tresh said in an email. “I am grateful for this opportunity and the trust bestowed to me to keep California’s data and information systems safe. I will miss working with the talented staff at the California Technology Agency and the Office of Information Security.”

In August 2011, Brown appointed Tresh as CISO and director of the Office of Information Security within the Technology Agency. As the state’s chief of IT security, Tresh works closely with federal agencies, the Department of Homeland Security, the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center, and the California Highway Patrol, which handles reported IT crimes.

Previously he served as the CIO for the California National Guard, a position he accepted after returning from a 2006 combat tour in Iraq.

Starting in 1993, Tresh served in numerous positions at the California National Guard, including as telecommunications manager. He has served in the military for more than 33 years.

“I have been a state employee for about 10 years, because in the guard they’re both federal and state, so it’s been a very easy move,” Tresh said in an interview with Techwire last fall, referring to his move from the military into state government. Read the Techwire profile on Tresh here.

As director of Personnel and Human Resources at the California Military Department, Tresh will be in charge of human resources and customer service in the California National Guard for Active Guard and Reserve members. He will start the new position on Feb. 1.
