One Million Transactions in a Month

Arizona hits a milestone in its implementation of electronic government services.

PHOENIX -- In a single month this year, over one million electronic-government transactions were conducted online in Arizona, state officials said.

"E-government is more than a Web site," said Gov. Jane Dee Hull. "E-government can redefine the relationship for government to citizens by delivering these fundamental services directly to the citizenry using safe, secure and convenient technologies of the 21st Century."

The state surpassed one million electronic-government transactions in May 2002, officals said, and the online services included renewals of motor-vehicle registrations, obtaining hunting and fishing licenses, filing individual tax returns, ordering birth and death certificates and others.

This count of transactions does not include the millions of information requests or printing of online forms, officials said, but was based on transactions citizens and businesses conducted with Arizona state government.

In May 2002, more than 52,000 vehicle owners renewed vehicle registrations through the Internet or phone -- about one in five citizens, officials said.

"Arizona wants to add value to government using technology solutions," said Craig Stender, Arizona CIO and director of the Government Information Technology Agency."The top technology initiatives are e-government, security and enterprise architecture; and they are not mutually exclusive. Arizona is building an enterprise-wide architecture to host e-government solutions for citizens to do business online."
