Police Officers to Receive Online Training

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The county sheriff's office will offer online training courses to its 3,000 employees. Online courses -- which may cover key issues such as sexual harassment, blood-borne pathogens and violence in the workplace -- should reduce expenses generated by training-related travel and overtime, according to the agency.

To date, virtually all training at the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office has been conducted either in classrooms or in the field. The agency has implemented new technology -- the THINQ TrainingServer learning management system (LMS) -- which allows the agency to create online courses and classes that include a blend of online and classroom instruction.

"Adopting the THINQ LMS will make our learning programs more efficient and practical," said Capt. Alan May of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Bureau of Training. "The point, however, isn't to make our work easier, though that's certainly a benefit. It's about performing our jobs better and keeping Palm Beach County safe for citizens, employees and visitors."

The agency's accreditation standards require 40 yearly hours of training for law enforcement personnel and corrections officers, and 24 yearly hours for sworn civilian employees. The learning management system will track and manage all learning resources, events and personnel training information. As a result, the department will generate reports on any aspect of the training, or on the groups or individuals taking a particular course or curriculum.
