(TNS) — North East ISD notified about 5,000 current and former employees of a potential data breach after an employee’s email was hacked.

On Aug. 25, a hacker gained access to the account of an employee who works in payroll in an attempt to divert school funds to an unknown bank account, the school district said. A district spokesperson said the district was able to shut down the attack before any money was transferred.

After further investigation, the district learned that the employee’s credentials were compromised and that there is a possibility the hacker obtained important employee payroll information, including names and social security numbers.

North East ISD sent letters last week notifying current and former employees who may have been affected by the cyber attack.

Judson ISD experienced a ransomware attack during the summer that forced the school district to pay the hackers in order to restore its access to phones and emails.
