The online education nonprofit VHS Learning has developed a new Python computer programming course set to begin next fall as employers look to fill vacant IT positions in increasingly tech-integrated industries, a news release last week said.

According to the announcement, the introductory online computer science course will teach students how to code using Python to gain foundational skills needed in IT-related jobs, where the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects 670,000 new openings will emerge by 2030. The course comes as K-12 school districts across the country work to expand their computer science catalogs to meet changing workforce demands.

“Part of our ongoing mission is to make computer science education more accessible to all students, which is why we’re so excited to offer the new Python Programming course,” President and CEO of VHS Learning Carol DeFuria said in a statement. “Python is user-friendly and fun to learn, even for beginners with no prior programming experience. In addition to learning the basics of this versatile, powerful programming language, students get to write code, design programs, engage in thoughtful discussions, and have fun along the way.”

According to the announcement, the 15-week introductory course will feature practice labs, student projects and multimedia-driven lessons and will complement other VHS programming courses focusing on Java and Scratch.

In addition, it said, the course counts toward high school credits at some K-12 districts and is open to all high school students interested in learning more about IT-related subjects beyond current K-12 curricula. For more information on how to enroll, visit my.vhslearning.org.
