sf.citi Launches Program to Inspire Middle School Girls to Pursue STEM

The San Francisco Citizens Initiative for Technology and Innovation has launched sf.girls to spark young females' interest in tech education and careers.

Middle school girls in San Francisco are getting a lesson on technology careers.

The San Francisco Citizens Initiative for Technology and Innovation (sf.citi), an organization created to leverage the power of the technology community around civic action in San Francisco, launched a program called sf.girls to get females interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers.

This spring, the group started holding assemblies at middle schools in the Bay Area -- at each event, a panel of women share why they started working in these fields, how they overcame tough obstacles and how the students could pursue a career like they did.

The sf.citi group also hosts a variety of STEM activities to spark girls' interest and spend time in small groups talking about STEM. This spring, the group has already visited four schools, including Claire Lilienthal Middle School, Buena Vista Horace Mann Middle School, Herbert Hoover Middle School and Martin Luther King Jr Middle School.
