A Kids’ Book About Safety

A great Christmas gift idea for the young children in your life.

All my adult life I have preached safety to my family. It is something my father drilled into me as a teen growing up. The popular phrase back then was “safety first!” He then of course was injured in a work accident (not his fault) as a locomotive engineer for the Illinois Central Railroad.

The question is, at what point do you begin to teach your children about safety? “The stove is hot!” might be one early lesson. Some parents have taught very young children how to dial 911 in an emergency and they make them memorize their home address.

The time to start drilling safety into kids is not when they start to drive. It should begin much sooner and there is a book to help you that is age appropriate beginning for 5-year-old children. A Kids Book About Safety was written by Soraya Sutherlin, an emergency manager with three young children herself.

The key, and this is pointed out in the book, is to have an adult walk through it with their children. It is a great way to talk about fire safety and home evacuation routes, etc.

With Christmas right around the corner, this would be a great gift for kids from their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. Then, take the time to sit down with them and go through the book. What if you save one young life — that would be amazing! A $20 investment in our future!
