Disaster Zone Podcast: Amateur Radio Systems

Our last line of communication when all other systems fail.

Sometimes I think that amateur radio doesn’t get the credit it deserves for what the various systems can provide before, during and after a disaster.

See my latest Disaster Zone podcast: “Amateur Radio Systems.”

As we start a new year, thank your own volunteers for their efforts in making your jurisdiction more disaster resilient by what they do with their own equipment, time, knowledge and energy.

Here’s the description of the podcast:

“Amateur radio is emergency management’s last best hope for maintaining communications in a disaster when all other systems fail. This podcast is an interview with two leaders from the Seattle Auxiliary Communications Service (Seattle ACS) Tim helming and Catherine Middleton-Hardie. Seattle ACS supports the Seattle Office of Emergency Management In my experience, they are one of the premier organizations of their type. In the podcast you will learn all about the different types of amateur radio organizations, the equipment, frequencies and wide variety of missions and activities that amateur radio operators support. And, a bit about how Seattle ACS is organized and maintains their operational readiness.”
Eric Holdeman is a contributing writer for Emergency Management magazine and is the former director of the King County, Wash., Office of Emergency Management.
