Disaster Zone Podcast: ‘School Shootings’

The school resource officer’s role and school shootings in general.

All school shootings are terrible to contemplate. But, contemplate we must. In this Disaster Zone podcast, “School Shootings,” we talk with a former law enforcement officer and former school resource officer (SRO) about their duties in a school environment. Then we also review how first responders have changed tactics since responding to the 1999 Columbine High School shooting in Colorado.

We also do a brief review of the Uvalde school shooting and the mistakes made, as best we can tell from the reporting that has come out since that tragedy.

Here’s the podcast description:

“It is unfortunate that mass shootings continue to occur and that schools remain a target for unhinged gunmen. In this podcast Meg Cuttino is the guest. She was a former law enforcement officer and School Resource Officer (SRO), until she became the emergency management coordinator for the University of South Carolina’s regional campuses. Today she is an emergency management consultant with Hagerty Consulting. In this podcast we discuss what has changed about responding to school shootings since the 1999 Columbine High School Shooting and what can be done to prevent school shootings from physical security at schools to having more school counselors. The terrible tragedy that happened at Uvalde Texas is also discussed.”
Eric Holdeman is a contributing writer for Emergency Management magazine and is the former director of the King County, Wash., Office of Emergency Management.
