Disasters Help Define the South
Two of the top seven researched words have to do with disasters.
I am always interested in culture, since it is what defines us as a nation, region, state or even a town. Thus, when I read this from the Washington Post, “Data reveals what really defines the American South,” I noted that in the list of words, rank ordered for defining the South, No. 5 was “hurricanes,” which is right after “dolphins” and just before “armadillos.” Then, coming in at No. 7 was “stilts.”
Stilts, of course, being what homes are built on to avoid storm surge from a hurricane. Disasters define the South — in one form or fashion.
