If data is king, then the digital map is the crown.
It has been a bit since I blogged on GIS mapping, so reading Governing magazine (again) I saw Mapping the Future as an article there--which reminded me of the need for more GIS in emergency management.
We have to get better at utilizing this tool. To do so will require that we have our own GIS techs in emergency management. They may not be committed full time to mapping, but it is a terrific additional skill that would make any candidate for emergency management coordinator a very attractive hire in my book.
As noted at the end of the article, there are not enough students from a cross discipline perspective getting the training needed to be proficient. Make yourself more marketable and become proficient in GIS.
