Job: Operations Unit Manager — Washington State Emergency Management

The position I left back in 1996.

You know you are old when you meet an AmeriCorps member who was born in the year you switched jobs back in 1996.  The job I left back then was the Operations Unit Manager position at Washington State Emergency Management Division.

This is one of the better-paying jobs in the state emergency management system. Back when I left, the pay topped out at $50,000 and now it is at $120,000.

Good people are needed at this office. As you have likely noticed, there has been a large number of recruitments in the last year — 22 in total. Given that this job is one of the higher-level positions, you have the ability to influence more change in the organization.

Eric Holdeman is a contributing writer for Emergency Management magazine and is the former director of the King County, Wash., Office of Emergency Management.
