Omicron: What We Know We Don’t Know

It is still very fuzzy right now.

The good news is that researchers and the medical community are constantly on the lookout for new variants of the COVID-19 virus. That work led to early detection of the new omicron variant. In fact, there have been hundreds of variants, but the omicron is causing concern just about everywhere.

What we don’t know now and maybe won’t know for weeks is:

  • Are the existing vaccines effective against this new variant?
  • Is the new variant more transmissible?
  • Is an infection with omicron more lethal?

People in general do not like to have imprecise information. This type of informational setting makes it ripe for exploitation by those looking to sow seeds of disinformation.

My advice is sit tight. Don’t react to every little bit of news. Remember when Merck announced its anti-viral pill was 90 percent effective at preventing serious illness and death? Well, the FDA approved the drug, which needs to be administered in the first five days of symptoms of illness, announcing it as being 30 percent effective.

Stay tuned for updates!
