Surviving Sandy — the Book

Interestingly, it was students who led the effort to publish this book.

While I blogged on the book, Surviving Sandy previously, I found out a few new facts about the book. One that really impressed me is that it was students who instigated the publishing of the book. See below:

"Our book — Surviving Sandy, The Superstorm That Changed Our Lives — was born in the hearts of students of a small private school — Pascack Valley Learning Center in Airmont, NY — along with the support and tireless endeavors of their parents and friends — persons who had come face-to-face with the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy. Their volunteer efforts, bringing helping hands, food and supplies to victims and rescue workers in hard-hit areas, plus drives to collect donations of funds, clothing and living essentials for many who had lost everything, gave them firsthand exposure to the horrific realities of such a storm."

It is stories like the above that give me hope for the future. I'm beginning to think that it will take generations Y and Z to bring reform to the United States. The recent school shooting in Florida has motivated students to lead, since older generations appear to be frozen in their positions and beliefs. Just as the publication of this book had the energy and impetus from children, I can't wait to see what the NRA might say about these kids and their beliefs, or what the president might tweet if he comes in for criticism from them. To use a famous Japanese quote following the attack on Pearl Harbor, "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve." This may be the younger generations' resolve that attacks many of the current issues our elected leaders are reluctant to confront.

The book is now on Amazon, and is being offered at a 40 percent discount from the cover price ($49.95), at $29.95, with FREE shipping. It has a 4.9 out of 5.0 rating from 32 independent reviewers.

If you lived through Sandy or know someone who did, this would be a great book to give as a gift or have in your home. We need parents sharing disaster history with their children so we don't repeat the mistakes of the past. What better way than to page through a book that documents the before, during and after results of Superstorm Sandy.
