Red Cross
(TNS)  - September is National Preparedness Month, and San Antonio's Office of Emergency Management wants you to be ready should disaster strike.

A few of the tips the office has posted on social media:

Keep up with disasters in the area.

Communicate with family about your status in an emergency.

Make an emergency kit.

Have a plan for sheltering in place or evacuating.

In case of emergency, the office says you should have at least three days' worth of the following:

1. Water—a gallon per person

2. Nonperishable food items

3. Battery-powered or hand-crank radio

4. Flashlight

5. First-aid kit

6. Extra batteries

7. Sanitation and hygiene products

8. Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation

9. Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities

10. Manual can opener

11. Maps

12. Cellphone, chargers and a backup battery

On social media, the office stressed that the items should be easy to reach and that people should regularly check that their supplies are not out of date.

People with disabilities are also encouraged to include additional items in their emergency kits, like a list of the serial numbers and descriptions of medication, medical devices and supplies for service or support animals.

In a post specifically geared toward people with pets, the office recommended that people keep a picture of themselves with their pets as well as any ownership and medical records. And pets should be microchipped.
