The National Weather Service in New Orleans says 2-4 inches of rain have fallen. Another 1.25-2.5 inches of rain is expected to fall in an hour in portions of the warned areas.

“Locally higher rainfall amounts ranging from 5-10 inches and intense rain rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour could lead to areas of flash flooding,” the NWS says. “The highest threat will be low-lying an poorly drained areas.”

Water could cover roadways in some areas. “Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads,” the NWS warns. “Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.”

River flooding forecast

Minor Coastal flooding also could occur, with a flood advisory through Thursday morning for coastal areas of Harrison and Hancock counties, where tides are 1 to 2 feet above normal.

Harrison County Emergency Management says there are river flood warnings for the Biloxi and Wolf rivers.

Flood forecasts for the rivers are listed below:

— The Biloxi River, where the flood stage is 12 feet, is forecast to crest Thursday evening at 13.5 feet.

— The Wolf River, where the flood stage is 8 feet, is forecast to crest Friday morning near 9 feet.

— The Tchoutacabouffa River is forecast to remain below flood state of 8 feet.
