Michigan’s Website Overhaul Aims to Improve User Experience

The state of Michigan has launched 19 new agency websites and will continue to launch additional sites in the coming months. The effort replaces the state's 20-year-old content management system.

Michigan recently launched 19 “refreshed” state agency websites as part of a series of launches to improve user experience and modernize technology.

The series of state department website releases began on Jan. 14, and the state will continue launching additional department websites on a monthly basis through April 2022 as part of the new Michigan.gov portal.

These new sites are the result of a multiyear project led by the Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB) that began in 2017 to improve the ways citizens interact with government on Michigan.gov by updating the 20-year-old website content management system. The project entailed the overhaul of over 170,000 web pages and over 100 GB of digital assets.

The new website includes improvements like the alignment of agency websites under one state brand for a more consistent web experience for users. Another benefit of the modernized platform is the ability to offer content personalization. It will also incorporate social media onto the sites and standardize navigation. These features aim to improve both accessibility and usability.

"We are excited about our multisite capabilities, and, longer term, the ability to personalize content at a global level for visitors,” said Suzanne Pauley, DTMB eMichigan director in the announcement.
