Henderson County, N.C., Mourns Sudden Loss of IT Director

Becky Snyder, who served as the county’s director of IT for more than 10 years, died suddenly at work this week. She had been with the local government for more than two decades.

(TNS) — Henderson County, N.C., is mourning the sudden loss of a treasured friend and colleague.

Becky Snyder, who worked for Henderson County government for decades, including more than 10 years as its IT director, collapsed and died at work Tuesday.

"We are grieving as individuals and as an organization," said County Manager Steve Wyatt. "We are grieving a tremendous loss of someone who was loved by the folks she worked with."

He said he's spoken with her family, and a memorial service is being planned. Specifics have not been finalized.

Snyder had worked for the county for more than 20 years, Wyatt said. He promoted her to lead the IT department about 12 years ago and described her as an extremely professional, knowledgable and intelligent person.

"However, those were not her best qualities," he said, adding that she was a "very kind, caring and thoughtful person. She was a lady, a gentlelady in every sense of the word."

Snyder was very committed to public service and helping people, Wyatt said. She always went out of her way to serve, and he's never heard anyone say anything negative about any interaction with her.

"Becky was a wonderful person," he said. She will continue to be missed, not for what she did, but for who she was.

Snyder collapsed Tuesday morning while in a meeting with Assistant County Manager Amy Brantley, Wyatt said. Within a matter of seconds, a county employee from an adjacent office was there and began CPR, he added. Paramedics arrived within a few minutes and "performed a Herculean effort to bring Becky back."

"The man upstairs, he must have been having some software problems and he needed somebody that he could reach out to to help him work out those kinks, and he could think of no better person than Becky Snyder and she was called away from us," Wyatt said.

"The paramedics did everything that they could, but sometimes it's beyond our ability to alter the outcomes of these matters, and they're settled in a way that defies our comprehension."
