New York State Appoints New CIO

After denials earlier this year that New York was looking for a new chief information officer, the state has hired a new chief information officer. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Dec. 3 the appointment of Maggie Miller as the state’s new CIO. Miller replaces Brian Digman, who was named state CIO of the year in 2012 for his work as CIO of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. 

“Maggie Miller has a proven record as an innovative, business technology leader, and I am proud to have her join our team as Chief Information Officer of Information Technology Services,” Cuomo said in a press release. “Maggie’s public- and private-sector experiences make her uniquely qualified to manage the state’s IT services and help ensure state government is working for New Yorkers. I look forward to having Maggie begin her state service and join us in moving New York forward."

Miller will officially start on Dec. 8, heading the New York State Office of Information Technology Services. Her roles are to “oversee the agency’s centralized IT services to the state and government entities, set statewide technology policy for all state government agencies, and monitor all large technology expenditures in the state to find more efficient, low-cost and innovative solutions,” according to the release.

Miller previously held CIO positions at Girl Scouts of the USA, Warner Music Group, Dell, London-based J. Sainsbury PLC, London-based National Westminster Bank PLC, the Merrett Group in London, and London-based TUI Travel.

In 2013, New York’s keystone technology projects under Digman [PDF] included an IT consolidation effort bridging the state’s data centers, email systems, voice over Internet protocol systems, and enterprise identity access management systems.
