North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper tapped state CIO Eric Boyette to lead the Department of Transportation (NCDOT) ahead of the retirement of the agency’s current secretary, Jim Trogdon, at the end of the month.

Before he was appointed to lead the Department of Information Technology (DIT) in 2017, Boyette spent about 22 years of his civil service career with NCDOT. He rose to the rank of the agency’s CIO before being elevated to the governor’s cabinet.

The governor also named Boyette’s successor, Deputy State CIO Tracy Doaks, in his Tuesday news release.

“Eric Boyette and Tracy Doaks have served our state with distinction throughout their careers, and I am pleased that they will continue working on behalf of all North Carolinians,” Cooper said in the prepared statement.

As deputy CIO, Doaks is tasked with managing the Service Delivery Division and providing enterprise application and infrastructure services across the state. Doaks joined DIT in 2015 after a stint with the Duke University Health System.
